Put in to bat on a tricky pitch following the previous day’s rain, Cape Town battled throughout – pinned back to a total of 29-3 from the first PowerPlay after Brackenfell opening bowler Philip Kleynhans produced an opening spell of 3-0-10-2.

Dewald Botha counter-attacked for a while for Cape Town, hitting three sixes and two fours in his knock of 38.

Left-arm seamer Brandon Viret also struck in each of his two spells, including that of batting mainstay Dewald Botha.

Medium-pacer Ruan Vlok bowled a tidy spell of 4-0-15-2 to maintain Brackenfell’s dominance, as Cape Town could not break free from the seam bowling shackles.

Finally, Etienne Jewell bagged the last two wickets to finish with 3/21, dooming Cape Town to the task of defending a barely run-a-ball total.

If Cape Town held any illusions about their ability to defend their target, they were cruelly demolished by a masterclass batting performance by Brackenfell’s Gloucestershire opening bat Chris Dent – his undefeated 89 from just 47 balls included six sixes and ten fours, and won the game almost single-handedly for Brackenfell with a full seven overs to spare.
