Opening the bowling, Cape Town left-arm spinner Michal Lord picked up two scalps in his first spell to reduce Bellville to 23-3 in barely the first half-hour of the match.

Bellville opening bat Reece du Plessis survived two early chances to eventually bat into the 34th over of his side’s innings, scoring a patient 62 from 123 balls and sharing a 95-run fourth-wicket stand with Philip Kleynhans.

Philip Kleynhans was the anchoring glue that held the Bellville innings together, batting from the tenth over through to the end in making an unbeaten 87 from 91 balls that gave the visitors a dominant total to defend.

Visiting skipper Marcus Fourie ultimately contributed a brisk 29 from 32 balls to his side’s efforts, providing impetus in the closing overs as Bellville finished strongly.

Cape Town opening bowler Jaden Rose grabbed an early wicket in a superb opening spell as the home side seized the early initiative, but found the going as hard as any of his fellow bowlers in the closing overs when Bellville clobbered 98 off the final ten overs.

Wiehann Meyer added the finishing touches to a dominant Bellville finishing effort with the bat, striking six fours and a six in his unbeaten 44 from 27 balls.

Cape Town skipper Tristan Coetzee gave his side’s run chase a scintillatingly flying start, cracking four fours and a six off eight balls before getting out.

Josh Chippendale seemed to be setting out his stall for a significant innings at the top of the Cape Town order too, striking six fours in his 34 from 39 balls before falling at a crucial juncture.

The introduction of Marcus Fourie’s left-arm spin had an electrifying effect on proceedings, as he captured three wickets without cost in his opening over to completely derail Cape Town’s run chase.

Michal Lord survived a frentic start to his innings to eventually settle down and provide the backbone of Cape Town’s innings, scoring 65 from 77 balls to keep their hopes alive.

Craig Jeffery hit five fours in his knock of 27 for Cape Town, sharing a 70-run stand with Michal Lord that helped the home side recover somewhat from a disastrous collapse to 63-6.

Bellville first-change seamer Evert Carstens then wrapped up the match for the visitors, knocking over the final three wickets in his second spell to finish with figures of 4-44.
