The Plumstead-based outfit's second Limited Overs win in two matches at the UWC Oval was achieved on the back of their highest Limited Overs score of the past 13 seasons, built around a 175-run second-wicket stand (the visitors' second-highest partnership during the same period) between Dominic Telo and Francois Vermaak. It came after Cape Town had been asked to bat first on a greenish-looking pitch, and had duly lost an early wicket. However, the pitch soon revealed itself to be rather docile, and Telo and Vermaak quickly set about exploiting it. Vermaak had an early moment of fortune when he was castled by a no-ball on 9*, but thereafter was seldom troubled by the bowling en route to scoring his fourth fifty in as many matches before eventually holing out on the boundary.
Telo was the real star of the show though, racing to his third hundred of the season in unstoppable fashion. He too benefited from a lucky escape, having been misstumped on 55* shortly after the pair had posted their hundred partnership inside 19 overs. It was to prove an expensive let-off for the students, as Telo therefter combined some powerful hitting with impressively deft placement to race to a 94-ball century, striking 15 fours altogether in what would eventually become the highest individual innings played by anyone on either side in Cape Town's 61 Limited Overs matches contested over the past 13 seasons.
Home team seamer Dean Oosterwyk had the satisfaction of capturing the first three wickets to fall, but thereafter took some heavy stick from a strongly-finishing Telo in particular - his last two overs travelling for 29 inside the final powerplay. By contrast, fellow seamer Imraan Hendricks recovered from an early mauling to finish well, dismissing both Telo and Kirk Wernars - the latter having provided some continuity for Cape Town through the final ten overs, despite struggling throughout with the fluency of his own scoring.
Having racked up 245 in their 45 overs the last time that the two sides met in a Limited Overs match at the UWC Oval, the University of the Western Cape were by no means out of the picture when they began their pursuit of the daunting target. Openers Mujaid Behardien and Ashley Fernandez were also little troubled by the easy-paced pitch, and immediately set about laying a foundation with some sharp running between the wickets in particular. The introduction of Darren Rolfe into the attack dismissed them both in quick succession though, and after having soon slipped to 51 for three the home side was obliged to spend some time consolidating.
Dane Campbell and captain Robert van der Ross duly achieved that aim well, together adding 60 for the fourth wicket in 15 overs as the students repositioned themselves for their final assault. By then the required rate had steadily edged up to more than 7½ an over though, and a double break-through by Cape Town's spin twins Matthew Olsen and Tom Main, bowling well in tandem, further added to the pressure. As long as van der Ross remained they still had an outside chance though, so when he fell as the first of another quick double break-through by Olsen and Main seven overs later, the home side's challenge faded. Having managed to find the boundary just eight times throughout their innings, the asking rate was far too high for the tail to cope with, and Main claimed a wicket in each of his last two overs to seal a dominant 84-run win with five overs to spare.
