vs Tygerberg (23 Jan 2010)

Cape Town made it a thumpingly successful first day of the 2009/10 AMA20/20 competition for themselves, crushing Tygerberg by 62 runs in their afternoon match at the PP Smit Complex in Bellville to compliment their earlier victory over Glamorgan.

Whereas Glamorgan had at least managed to live with Cape Town for much of the previous match though, Tygerberg were outclassed from the outset - and never once looked like mounting a serious challenge. Again winning the toss, Cape Town this time took first use of the pitch - and employed it very successfully in blazing their way to their highest-ever score in the short history of the competition. Tom Main, a batsman whose style one can't help but feel was tailor-made for this form of the game, swung merrily from the outset as expected, and though missing frequently he nevertheless connected often enough for the opening pair to rattle up fifty together inside the first five overs.

Tygerberg captain Denver Carolus put an immediate spoke in Cape Town's wheels upon introducing his leg-breaks into the attack though, picking up a wicket in each of his first three overs in an amazing first spell of 3-0-6-3. Cape Town's progress was thus left wavering somewhat at 70 for four after 11 overs, and though skipper Jonathan Holgate added some impetus thereafter with 28 from 26 balls, he became the second scalp for off-spinner Morné Rex in as many overs just as he was getting into his stride - lapsing the Plumstead-based outfit back into trouble at 98 for six with five overs remaining.

Cometh the hour cometh the man though, and Shane Martin's subsequent arrival at the crease heralded a dazzling display of clean power-hitting that not only produced a remarkable turnaround in Cape Town's fortunes, but also effectively sealed the game's outcome then and there. Having become something of a First XI 20/20 specialist the season before, Martin left no-one in doubt about his ability in this format, cracking six sixes as he stormed to an undefeated 41 from just 18 balls. Ably supported by Wayne Hendricks, the pair transformed the fortunes of Tygerberg's spinners in the twinkling of an eye, dispatching Rex's next over for 18 and then Carolus's final one for 23 more. As a result the pair slammed eight sixes and two fours between them in the last five overs, during which time they added an undefeated 70 runs together in just 18 minutes.

Facing a mammoth target of 169 to win, even the presence of Proteas all-rounder Vernon Philander in their ranks could not inspire Tygerberg, and their run-chase turned out to be a non-event. Both openers fell cheaply, and once Main had castled Philander as the first of his two victims, the match's outcome was never in doubt. Jenkin Adams extended Tygerberg's resistance for a while before becoming the left-arm spinner's other victim, but his 35-ball innings of 36 (including a brace of fours and sixes) represented the only innings of substance managed by any Tygerberg batsman. As such the match's last seven overs were little more than playing out time, and Cape Town's ultimate net run rate advantage of +3.10 at the conclusion of proceedings represented their second-biggest win in the competition - only the Third Division side Brooklyn Telkom having suffered a worse hiding - and then only marginally so.
