vs Primrose, 21 March 2009

Having lost their opening match earlier in the day, a stunning batting blitz by Shane Martin propelled Cape Town to an easy six-wicket win over Primrose later that afternoon, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the Semi-Finals alive.

Primrose had made the better start to the match after choosing to bat first, as captain Achmat Magiet got his side off to a flyer by personally hammering 19 runs off the first two overs. He fell to Geoff Dods in his first over though, and with the subsequent batsmen unable to find the boundary anywhere near as regularly, Primrose had slipped back to 76 for four with just seven overs remaining by the time that Dods completed a commendable spell of two for 17 from his allotted four overs.

With Matthew Olsen also chipping in with two wickets in his four overs on the trot, thereafter only Saliem Toefy could make any further impact with the bat. Largely thanks to his efforts in reaching 26 from 17 balls, Primrose had stuttered to a still unconvincing 109 for six with just three overs remaining, but then the wheels fell off completely. Wayne Hendricks earned two stumpings from ten balls of his left-arm spin, and helped by two run outs in the space of five balls, Primrose lost their last four wickets in two overs to collapse to 125 all out. The last five batsmen contributed just two singles between them, leaving Toefy to slam a six and four off successive balls before falling to his next delivery, having top-scored with 40 from 28 deliveries.

It was a mediocre target at best, and Cape Town lost no time in putting the match's outcome beyond doubt. Martin blazed away in rare fashion at the top of the order, crashing five sixes and six fours in the space of 20 balls while screaming to an 18-ball fifty. With Francois Vermaak doing his bit at the other end with a rather more sedate run-a-ball innings of his own, Cape Town consequently posted 85 without loss from the six fielding restriction overs, and the game had been won and lost.

Thus, although the introduction of Firaaz Booley's left-arm spin at this point in proceedings brought immediate and dramatic reward, the ship had already sailed as far as Primrose was concerned. Dismissing Martin for 60 from a mere 22 balls with his second delivery, Booley went on to capture a wicket in each of his second and third overs as well. However, it was all too little too late, and Rory O'Brien swung two sixes off the next over to usher Cape Town to the brink of a comprehensive win with some 46 balls to spare.
