PRIMROSE 211 (Rory Kleinveldt 85, Saliem Toefy 33, Sharhidd Taliep 30, Clive Gie 4-16) beat CAPE TOWN 198-6 (Mark Ritchie 55, Damian Thornton 38*, Faghmie Jardine 3-54) by 13 runs
An imposing all-round contribution by Primrose's provincial player Rory Kleinveldt with the bat, the ball and in the field proved to be the difference between the two sides on the day, and allowed the visitors to maintain their recent hold over Cape Town with four wins from their last four encounters. First Kleinveldt contributed more than half of the 160 runs added during his 133-minute stay at the crease, before going on to choke the home side's response by conceding just 25 off his ten overs - while chipping in with a run out as well just for good measure.
Put in to bat in humid overcast conditions on a pitch offering noticeable bounce, some initial leg side-ish bowling nevertheless allowed Primrose to get off to a reasonable start. However, Cape Town soon adjusted their radar to rock the visitors with four wickets in successive overs, toppling them to 34 for four. That, however, brought Kleinveldt to the crease, with a perfect foil in his captain Sharhidd Taliep. Fed the strike regularly, Kleinveldt cracked some crisp boundaries through the covers and over mid wicket, mixed in with some devil-may-care singles that Cape Town's fumbling ground fielding could not exploit. Together the pair added 80 in 19 overs to undo much of the early damage. Although Clive Give, by far the pick of the day's bowlers, returned to dismiss Kleinveldt in the first over of his second spell, Saliem Toefy continued the momentum to see Primrose passed the 200-run mark and ensure a competitive total.
Cape Town in their turn also got off to a solid start, Mark Ritchie's sixth half-century of the season dominating a first wicket partnership of 58. It was that man Kleinveldt again who broke the stand though, as part of a seven-over spell conceding just 14 that built the pressure. With all the bowlers keeping it tight the asking rate began to climb ever higher, as the home team batsmen became bogged down and finding themselves consistently around 20 runs behind Primrose's score at the corresponding stage. Needing 5.70 from each of their last 17 overs, they just about managed it off Faghmie Jardine's left-arm spin, but in the process he claimed three wickets and the Kleinveldt-assisted run out. Cape Town's captain Damian Thornton tried hard, scoring 31 off his last 24 deliveries, but with Kleinveldt bowling at the death and conceding just eleven singles off his last three overs, the home side were always going to fall short.
