A Cape Town Cricket Club six-a-side team, comprised of Geoff Dods (capt.), Matt Olsen, Tom Main, Craig Shepherd, Shane Martin and Darren Rolfe, made the fairly long trip to Groot Drakenstein, just outside Franschhoek, on Sunday 7 February 2010 to contest the very prestigious six-a-side tournament held there each year.
In their opening match, the very well-balanced Cape Town side posted the tournament’s highest score of the day, amassing 81 from their five overs against Claremont Cricket Club. Cape Town’s bowling did not disappoint either, and Claremont ultimately fell well short of their target.
Cape Town carried their good form into the Semi-Finals, where Matt Olsen’s 54 not out, with good support from Tom Main and Shane Martin, resulted in a new tournament top score of 88 from the allotted five overs. Cape Town’s accuracy with the ball and ruthlessness in the field then ensured their place in the Final, in which they faced a strong Fish Hoek side.
Notwithstanding another fine knock by Matt Olsen, Cape Town’s batting did not fire to the same extent in the Final, and they had to be satisfied with defending a score of 63. Steady bowling and the ability to pick up regular wickets put Fish Hoek under increasing pressure though, and Tom Main clinched a well-deserved tournament victory for Cape Town by successfully defending the 19 runs needed from the final over.
