Opening bat Mathew Goles was quickly into his stride after Cape Town had elected to bat first, striking two fours and a six off Durbanville opening bowler Jaco Castle’s first two overs.

His opening partner William Hantam soon joined the party as well after beginning with eight dot balls, striking four fours off his next nine balls faced to give Cape Town an ideal start.

Mathew Goles reached his fifty in a flurry of strokeplay against the left-arm spin of Bradley Petersen, cracking 18 from his first four deliveries to race to a 27-ball fifty that included three sixes and six fours.

After the departure of Goles to end a 95-run opening stand compiled in just 9½ overs, Hantam maintained the momentum to reach a 35-ball fifty of his own, with two sixes and seven fours.

Durbanville skipper Nathan Swartz added the finishing touches to a strong fightback by his side in the middle overs, striking with consecutive deliveries in his final over as Cape Town lost four for 14 in 16 balls.

Facing an imposing target of 167, Durbanville opener Leon le Roux gave his side an encouraging start with his 30 from 20 balls.

Cape Town seamer Nicholas Scott kept the match evenly balanced throughout, bagging a wicket in each of his first three overs as Durbanville’s attempts to hit out went wrong.

However, Jaco Castle proved a stumbling block to Cape Town’s ambitions, keeping his side in the contest as he stabilised the innings without compromising the required scoring rate.

A double-strike by seasoned Cape Town opening bowler Darren Rolfe in his last over set up an enthralling finish, with Durbanville needing eleven from the final over to win.

Ultimately though, Jaco Castle would not be denied. Having just reached a 34-ball fifty with his fourth six, and six needed from the final ball of the match to force a tie, he somehow found a way to do that too – and then ensured that Durbanville would win the subsequent super over by striking a six and two fours in it.
