Annual Cape Town Cricket Club awards for 2019-20 season

Cyril Kramer Cup Spirit Award – Junior Teams

Winner: Bruce Dennis

Instituted by former Cape Town Cricket Club president, life member and player Cyril Kramer in 1987-8, the Cyril Kramer Cup is awarded to the third, fourth, fifth or sixth team player displaying the most meritorious club and team spirit.

Gary Bricknell Cup Spirit Award

Winner: Byron van der Merwe

This award was instituted in 1976/77, in memory of the late Gary Bricknell, for the first or second team player displaying the most meritorious club and team spirit. Bricknell was killed while serving with the Regiment Westelike Provinsie in South West Africa in 1977. He was arguably the finest under-23 left-arm spin-bowling prospect in the country at the time.

Victor Cutting Award – Most Diligent Player at Practices

Winner: Callum Kukard

This award was instituted by former Cape Town Cricket Club first XI player and life member Victor Cutting, who contributed significantly to the identification of schoolboy talent – and mentoring of young players at the club.

Gerald Morkel Cup Best Fielder – Junior Teams

Winner: Kyle Titus

This cup was instituted by Gerald Morkel – a Cape Town Cricket Club life member and arguably one of the most dynamic chairmen the club has had. His contribution, including the building of the clubhouse and scoreboard, was huge.

Elgar Player Shield

Winner: Tyler Rhodes

Donated by Cape Town Cricket Club player and coach Derek Elgar, the Elgar Player Shield is awarded to the most valuable player in the third division teams.

Nick Commaille Trophy – Best Fielder – First Team

Winner: William Hantam

This award was instituted by JMM (Mick) Commaille – a Cape Town Cricket Club stalwart, who played for Western Province and South Africa. He was, at one stage, South Africa’s vice-captain.

Max Saacks Award Best Batsman – Junior Teams

Winner: Craig Shepherd

This award was instituted by Cape Town Cricket Club stalwart and former opening batsman, Max Saacks, who played for the club’s first XI from the late 1920s through to the Second World War. A gritty and uncompromising player, Saacks scored four centuries for the first XI.

Joe Abromowitz Cup Best Strike Rate – Junior Teams

Winner: Jonhenry Wilson

This award was introduced by Cape Town Cricket Club veteran and life member, the late Joe Abromowitz. He was involved with the club, as a player and administrator, for more than 50 years. The accolade is effectively for the junior teams bowler who took the most wickets in the least amount of overs – qualification: 20 wickets or more.

Dr Louis Bosman Cup – Most Runs – First Team

Winner: William Hantam

The first and oldest of the Cape Town Cricket Club awards, the Dr Louis Bosman Cups were instituted in the 1946/47 season. A club member and – at that stage – the member of parliament for the Cape Town Gardens constituency, Bosman announced his intention to donate four cups to the club as floating trophies to players for outstanding performances.

Dr Louis Bosman Cup – Most Wickets – First Team

Winner: Brendan Young

The first and oldest of the Cape Town Cricket Club awards, the Dr Louis Bosman Cups were instituted in the 1946/47 season. A club member and – at that stage – the member of parliament for the Cape Town Gardens constituency, Bosman announced his intention to donate four cups to the club as floating trophies to players for outstanding performances.

Tom Main Game-Changer Trophy

Winner: Brendan Young

This award was introduced in 2021 and named after Tom Main, who was an all-rounder for the first XI for an extended period. Main put in several excellent performances with bat and ball – and was able to change the course of a contest over a matter of overs.

Dr Louis Bosman Cup Most Improved Player – Junior Teams

Winner: Grant Olivier

The first and oldest of the Cape Town Cricket Club awards, the Dr Louis Bosman Cups were instituted in the 1946/47 season. A club member and – at that stage – the member of parliament for the Cape Town Gardens constituency, Bosman announced his intention to donate four cups to the club as floating trophies to players for outstanding performances.

Winner: Byron van der Merwe

Most Wickets in the Second Team

Winner: Lloyd Wingrove

A new award introduced in 2019, at the recommendation of the players and approval of the committee, a trophy has was instituted for the most wickets in the second team. This award, like others, will gain a personalised name from the club’s history in the future.

Mark Ritchie Cup – Most Runs in the Second Team

Winner: Tristan Coetzee

An award without name introduced in 2019, the award became known as the Mark Ritchie Cup in 2021, as recommended at player level and approved at committee level. Ritchie played over 100 fixtures for the first XI and, since, has become an important mentor and servant to the second XI.

MS Personnel Team of the Year Award

Winner: Fifth team

Instituted by former Cape Town Cricket Club players Mike and Shane Martin in 2008-9, the MS Personnel Team of the Year Award is given to the most outstanding CTCC team of the season.

President’s Cup

Winner: Rikus Walters

The most prestigious award at Cape Town Cricket Club, the President’s Cup was instituted by former club president Sandy Bairnsfather-Cloete in 1975 – and is awarded to the club member who has displayed exceptional and meritorious service over several years.

Boon Wallace Memorial Cup Club Cricketer of the Year

Winner: Brendan Young

Donated by the family of the late Boon Wallace, who was a Cape Town Cricket Club stalwart, former club president, life member, player and national cricket administrator, in 1994-5, the Boon Wallace Memorial Cup is awarded to the club cricketer of the year.
